Location

All meetings and workshops will be held at the West Des Moines Christian Church at 4501 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines. To get there from Interstate 35, exit at Mills Civic Parkway, exit 70. Turn east onto Mills Civic Parkway and drive about 0.9 mile. The West Des Moines Christian Church will be on the north side of Mills Civic Parkway. Meetings are in the Sanctuary in Building 2 and workshops are in Building 3.

January

Wednesday, January 24 – Lola bag
Tracy Feldmann

Tracy will lead you step by step through making a Lola handbag by Swoon Sewing Patterns. We’ll use the base pattern as designed but add in a few modifications for easier assembly and a beautiful finish. Kits will include linen lining fabric, hardware, interfacings and cork for handles and base – you bring only your exterior fabric choice.

Class Fee: $50; Kit will cost approximately $29

 

February

Wednesday, February 28  – Galaxies
Millie Kehrli

Galaxies is a spider web quilt inspired by an antique quilt in the Barton collection.  Participants will receive the pattern and spend the day learning from the antique quilt (as Barton had hoped) and playing with fabric to reinterpret this ageless design.

Wednesday, March 27 – Playing with Fabric Paints
Kevin Womack

Learn to create a series of unique fabrics as you explore playful exercises in design. Create original fabric designs. Add to your technique toolbox as we cover a wide variety of topics including stamping, stenciling, printing with found objects, direct application, and more. Join in the fun as we play, experiment and create. There will be a materials fee. Beginner to Advanced.

Thursday, March 28 – Surface Design Shuffle
Kevin Womack

Have you been creating or purchasing one of a kind fabrics and are stumped as to how to begin using them in your quilts? Explore design basics while following a set of easy steps and learn to use those unique surface-designed fabrics in an artful way. Beginner to Advanced.

Wednesday, April 24 – Static Charge Quilt

Learn to use the Deb Tucker, Studio 180 lemoyne star ruler as you perfectly piece this dynamic quilt based on the traditional banded lemoyne star pattern.

Thursday, April 25 – Rangeley Star
Sandy Nab

Learn to make complex stars in three sizes! Using Deb’s Tucker Trimmer 1 tool, all those complicated star points become simple to make. The project has a complex look, but is actually very streamlined to construct and you will be taught all the tips and tricks.

Wednesday, June 26 – Gradient dyeing
Kim Eichler-Messmer

Kim is the author of “Modern Color: An Illustrated Guide to Dyeing Fabric for Modern Quilts” and will help us dye our own fabric in this hands on workshop.  Prepare to get colorful!

Thursday, June 27 – Reverse Appliqué

You might have done applique, but have you done reverse appliqué?  Learn all about this intriguing technique and do it by machine or hand, your choice!

Few shapes have the commanding presence that curves generate in any artistic medium. Organic, improv curves offer timeless design options sure to delight makers and spark their imagination. Join in as we immerse ourselves in improvisation, color, design, saturation, and easily formed curves!

Thursday, July 25 – Memory of Stitches
Maday Delgado

This hand-stitching workshop puts sustainability in the forefront; utilizing vintage materials we create a connection to the past and an opportunity to honor how cotton comes into existence: seed to cloth. The texture created by applying hand stitching becomes the superstar of a sustainable, mindful practice. Kit will be available.

Wednesday, October 23 – Improv piecing traditional blocks

We will explore in depth the myriad of possibilities in a simple block.  Learn improv piecing techniques for easy construction and assembly.  Learn Sujata’s color techniques to make your quilts sparkle vibrantly

Thursday, October 24 – Kawandi hand quilting
Sujata Shah

Sujata grew up in Mumbia, India and says, ”I find hand stitching therapeutic and nourishing to the soul. Through my quilts I remain connected to my past, my culture and heritage.”  This will be a relaxing handwork class learning traditional Indian kawandi hand quilting and construction techniques.
